Creating a brighter connection between home and garden
This Rutland project began with a garden that felt dark, damp and disconnected from the house. The existing levels, tired surfaces and enclosed layout made the outdoor space feel like an afterthought, while also limiting the amount of natural light reaching the home.
The brief was simple but important: open the space up, bring light back into the house and create an outdoor area the clients genuinely wanted to spend time in.
The transformation
The existing garden was completely reworked to create a much stronger relationship between the house and the garden.
By opening up the space and introducing broad, generous areas of natural stone paving, the garden now feels considerably lighter and more spacious. The new levels create a natural flow through the space, while the generous steps provide both a practical route through the garden and a strong architectural feature.
A combination of natural stone, dark gravel, timber and soft planting gives the garden a relaxed, contemporary character that sits comfortably alongside the existing architecture.
The previously enclosed space has become a series of connected areas for sitting, entertaining and enjoying the garden.

Bringing the outside in
One of the key aims of the project was to improve the connection between the house and garden.
The new layout opens up the area immediately outside the house, allowing much more light to reach the interior. The large glazed doors now look directly onto a bright, open garden rather than a dark and enclosed space.
This creates a much more natural transition between indoor and outdoor living. Rather than feeling like a separate external area, the garden has become an extension of the home.
A garden designed to be used
The finished garden is deliberately informal and inviting. Comfortable seating, planting, gravel areas and a central outdoor fire create different places to sit and enjoy the space throughout the day.
The broad stone terraces provide plenty of room for entertaining, while the planting softens the hard landscaping and brings colour and movement back into the garden.
Most importantly, the garden now feels like somewhere the clients want to be.
What was once a dark, damp and underused space has been transformed into a light-filled outdoor living area, improving not only the garden itself but the way the whole home connects with the outdoors.
