This Rutland garden transformation started with a clear vision from the clients. They had already created their own drawing and had a strong idea of how they wanted the space to look and feel. Our role was to take that vision and turn it into a finished garden that felt natural, cohesive and sympathetic to the character of the property.
Before work began, we provided a detailed project brief, breaking down the materials, finishes and key features proposed for the garden. Where possible, we also provided samples so the clients could see and compare how different materials would work together before making their final choices.
A garden designed around curves
One of the defining features of this project was the decision to move away from traditional straight lines and square-edged landscaping.
No square edge in sight.
Instead, the garden was designed around flowing, organic curves that soften the space and create a much more natural feel. A circular lawn forms the centrepiece of the garden, surrounded by a carefully laid cobble edging that follows its sweeping shape.
A wrap-around sandstone patio provides generous entertaining space directly outside the house, while the curved layout allows the different areas of the garden to flow naturally into one another.

Natural materials with a contemporary finish
The choice of materials was particularly important in bringing the clients’ vision together.
The warm tones of the natural sandstone patio complement the existing stonework of the property, creating a seamless connection between the house and garden. Rather than relying on harsh concrete or straight-edged borders, vertical timber sleepers were used to create raised planting areas and define the different spaces.
The timber edging adds warmth and texture while also helping to introduce height and structure into the planting areas.

A wildlife pond as a focal point
Tucked into one of the curved borders is a wildlife pond, adding another layer of interest to the garden.
The pond incorporates natural stone and pebbles, helping it sit comfortably within the surrounding landscape rather than feeling like a separate feature. Its position alongside the patio means it can be enjoyed from the main entertaining area, while also bringing water and wildlife into the garden.
From a blank canvas to a finished garden
The transformation from the original garden was significant. What began as a largely unfinished space of exposed ground and construction materials was transformed into a considered outdoor environment with clearly defined areas for entertaining, relaxing, and planting.
